At this point in the year, we are starting to get into the routine of things and realizing what we will be doing throughout the year. I am really liking doing the creative writing because it is giving me a lot of time to work on my college application writing prompts and making sure they are all done by the deadline I need them done by. I like when we get to share a line or word from our writing because it makes me curious about what everyone in the class is writing about. Although, sometimes it is hard to choose something to share from mine. Another thing that I really enjoyed about this week was peer editing the summer reading essays. I liked being able to read an essay about books I did not read because, if it was a good essay, I would be able to understand what was going on and I would be able to realize the connection. We were able to get really good feedback on our essay and learn about where we should improve in our writing. http://writing2.richmond.edu/writing/wweb/peeredit.html This is a good guide to follow if you need help with peer editing. The poem I liked the most this week was "Please Don't Take My Air Jordans". The man reciting it really got my attention and I was intrigued with everything that he was saying. Every poem so far has had me thinking about other meanings it may have and what is going on in and around the writing.

This week, I was able to have my memory refreshed about our summer reading books and have the opportunity to talk to peers about what they thought of the books and their perspective on the content and meanings. We started by getting into small groups and we analyzed a few quotes and wrote what they meant to us. We then were supposed to choose 3 chapters from "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" that related to our other summer reading books. I liked doing this because I was able to make really good connections to each book and figure out the symbolism in each book. The books I read this summer were "Book Thief" and "Obasan". I liked reading "Book Thief" the most because it was about the Holocaust, which for some reason is a topic that I am very interested in. I liked "Obasan" too although, it was harder to understand and get through. We are beginning to write a group essay about or books and I am really looking forward to working on that and making even more connections. Another thing we did this week was explicate the poem "The Eagle". I liked doing this because it was not something I often do, so it was good to learn new techniques. https://engl.utoledo.edu/english/?page_id=733 this link is a really good guide to look at if you've never explicated a poem before. It got me to look at the deeper meaning of the poem and pick out and discuss things I might not think about on my own. I'm glad this will be something we do through out the year so I will improve and hopefully be able to look closer into things when I read them. Since it is just the beginning of the school year, this week we learned about how the class operates, what we will be doing throughout the year and we also simply got to know the teacher and the students in the class better. We added a description about us as writers and readers to our weebly page that really got me thinking. Before the activity, I did not really think about myself in the perspective that I had to for this writing piece. Doing the activity opened my mind up to how much time I take to read and write, how I started doing it and what I like to get out of it. I really enjoyed writing the piece about myself for my website. I think this year I will try a lot harder to get more into reading and try to get into doing it on my own time. The requirement of writing a paper about all of the books that we choose to read for SSR will give me a motivation to get it done and make sure I finish the book so I can write the best paper possible. A second thing that I enjoy in the class is the poem reading at the beginning of the hour. Usually, I do not really like to read poems but having them read to me is something I am beginning to like more. I also think that doing this will give me a better look into how different poems can be and what goes into them. I think the purpose of this is to open our minds, look at the bigger of picture if things and just to subject ourselves to world of poetry that not many people are into.
