This week, I was able to have my memory refreshed about our summer reading books and have the opportunity to talk to peers about what they thought of the books and their perspective on the content and meanings. We started by getting into small groups and we analyzed a few quotes and wrote what they meant to us. We then were supposed to choose 3 chapters from "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" that related to our other summer reading books. I liked doing this because I was able to make really good connections to each book and figure out the symbolism in each book. The books I read this summer were "Book Thief" and "Obasan". I liked reading "Book Thief" the most because it was about the Holocaust, which for some reason is a topic that I am very interested in. I liked "Obasan" too although, it was harder to understand and get through. We are beginning to write a group essay about or books and I am really looking forward to working on that and making even more connections. Another thing we did this week was explicate the poem "The Eagle". I liked doing this because it was not something I often do, so it was good to learn new techniques. https://engl.utoledo.edu/english/?page_id=733 this link is a really good guide to look at if you've never explicated a poem before. It got me to look at the deeper meaning of the poem and pick out and discuss things I might not think about on my own. I'm glad this will be something we do through out the year so I will improve and hopefully be able to look closer into things when I read them.
